All fiberboard cases have been sealed (painted) with clear coat varnish of plastic polyurethane a long time ago. This was probably done for 2 reasons: 1) for weather protection against moisture, 2) sealed coat soaks into fiberboard and strengthens it, 3) to seal the travel stickers for keep from falling off or drying out, plus easier to clean dirt from cases

Dark gray velvet with 3/4" foam pad attached to top and bottom of all drum cases. Note the dents in the velvet and foam pad around the circumference of the case. The foam pad and velvet cloth gave protection against friction of case wearing out chorme finish on the top of the T- claws.
